Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, our 4th and 5th grade students will be taking the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). School will operate on a regular schedule for all other grade levels with a minor change in lunch schedule for some students. We ask that our 4th and 5th grade students get a good night sleep the night before the test so they can feel refreshed and ready at school. Please continue to encourage students at home to minimize any anxiety that students might experience. They are ready for it!

Celebrations

PTA Membership Challenge
We did it!!  We ended our membership year with 773 PTA memberships which exceeded our goal of 100% parent membership! This is a huge celebration for our community! We couldn't have achieved the goal without the help from staff, parents and community members! Thank you!

This Week's News

STAAR Testing Days- Tuesday, April 1 & Wednesday, April 2
We will not be closing down the campus for visitors on STAAR Testing days. The rest of the school will follow their regular instructional schedule as usual. If you wish to eat with your child on STAAR Testing days, you can do so but please refer to the adjusted lunch schedule for the two testing days. Per Texas Education Agency guideline, nobody, including students, teachers, staff and parents, is allowed to ask questions or hold discussions regarding STAAR with students on the day of STAAR Testing.

Parking on Tin Cup
Parents, this is a friendly reminder not to park on Tin Cup between the crosswalk and where the road meets Olson Dr. You can park along Tin Cup up to the crosswalk point, but not past the crosswalk to alleviate traffic jam. Thank you for your support.

Coffee with Principal for Incoming Kinder Parents
Do you have a child that's joining Spicewood next school year? If yes, please come join us in the library this Friday at 8AM to meet the principal and learn about Spicewood ES!

Update on Bad Weather Makeup Days
The Texas Education Agency has approved Round Rock ISD's attendance waivers for January 28 and February 7. The district submitted a low-attendance waiver for January 28 since 10,000 students were in attendance. The district also submitted a waiver for February 7, 2014.  With the approval of both waivers, there will NOT be school on April 18 or June 2, 2014 for students.

KLRU Writers Contest for Kinder-3rd Grade

Children in kindergarten through third grade will be encouraged to write and illustrate stories and submit them to KLRU, which will then select winners and award prizes in May 2014. The KLRU-TV first place grade level winners will be entered into the national level of the Contest, where a renowned panel of judges select the national winners. Winners will be announced and national prizes will be awarded in June 2014. The KLRU-TV local Writers Contest will end April 7, 2014. Please review contest rules for detailed information before entering the story.

Spicewood Spring Carnival
Each year the Spicewood PTA hosts a Spring Carnival. In past years, it has taken place on
a Saturday afternoon. However, many parents expressed that with spring sports and other
weekend obligations, it is difficult to do more than just "drop by" the event. In response to
this feedback, PTA will host this year's carnival on Friday, April 11th, from 5pm - 8pm, with
an outdoor movie following the carnival. With the new "Twilight Carnival" we are hopeful that more families from Spicewood will join in for the evening. Your help of course is needed.
To learn more about planning the event, please contact Mrs. Robyn Steinhauser via phone (512-762-5015) or email carnival@spicewoodpta.org. Planning the event is a great way to meet new parents and participate in the Spicewood community. More detailed information about volunteer sign-up process will be shared in near future. Please take a look at a letter from Mrs. Steinhauser for opportunities to volunteer.

Updates from the Principal- Celebrations Included

Dear families and community members,

As we embark on the last 9-week learning period, we need your continuous support with attendance and tardy. The month of April can be stressful to our intermediate students as they will be asked to show mastery of what they have learned this school year on State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). Please continue to encourage our students and ensure them that they're ready to shine above and beyond.

Celebrations

Our students had a fabulous time throughout the day growing in knowledge by participating in enriched learning activities. I would like to thank all the presenters and parent volunteers; special thanks to Carole Callaghan who coordinated the entire day for our students!

Roots and Shoots Club Plants a Garden
Under the supervision of Mrs. Julie Jacobs (2nd Grad Teacher) and Ms. Jo Williams (4th Grade Teacher), students in Roots and Shoots Club took an initiative to plant a garden in the front part of our school building. We are so proud of our caring students and teachers that helped greatly to beautify our school for all.
Our garden looks great! Thanks to Roots and Shoots Club!

We're so proud of your hard work and we are grateful for all the parents who supported our students by volunteering their valuable time.

"One World, One Night" International Festival
Spicewood's "One World, One Night" International Festival was a big success. Civil War Reenactment - 5th Grade
Our fifth grade students spent Friday morning reenacting the Civil War in a solemn manner. Students were able to make meaningful connections; they discussed how people were affected by the war as well as how it led to the Emancipation Proclamation. Special thanks to 5th grade teachers who made this learning event possible!

This Week's News

Meet the Faces of Spicewood

Please be sure to take a moment to meet our wonderful staff: Mithu Deb (Art Teacher); Wendy Cain (Kindergarten Teacher); Megan McGowan (Interventionist/Dyslexia Specialist)

Dismissal Procedure
Parents, we're observing student behaviors that are concerning to their safety and we ask that you intervene as we dismiss our students at the end of the day. Teachers on dismissal duty will continue to monitor as well to ensure safety but we also need your support. :) Students climbing up trees, students stomping over flowerbeds, walking across the street without using crosswalks and such are highly concerning.

Fire Lanes Usage
Please avoid parking your vehicle on fire lanes at the front of the school at all times. This includes after school events as well. This is so that we ensure safety of all who are in the building at all times.

Kindergarten Round Up
Spicewood will be opening our door to parents of incoming kindergartners for registration this Wednesday, March 5 from 9AM to 2PM. Parents/guardians must bring the following documents: 1) Child's official birth certificate; 2) Child's immunization record; 3) Child's social security card; 4) Proof of residence within the school attendance zone (contract on house, lease agreement, actual title to house, current RRISD tax statement, or current utility bill indicating the address and the adult's name.) You should come to registration even if you do not have all of the above information. Parents will be given notice of when these items are due.

WatchDOGS Friday- Join Enrichment Day
Any dads/father figures planning to join us this Friday to volunteer will be able to help us at our annual Enrichment Day. Please sign up here and we'll connect you with Mrs. Callaghan who's seeking many more volunteers for the event!

Enrichment Day
Enrichment Day with a theme of How We Express Ourselves will take place this Friday. We are in a dire need of volunteers as we are very short as of now! Please contact Carole Callaghan by email at carole@csclawaustin.com or by phone at 512-six.three.six-6138.

Join the SPICEWOOD PTA
We're calling all parents and community members to join the Spicewood Parent Teacher Association (PTA). We have reached approximately 550 members for this year, including 100% participation from our wonderful staff. In order for us to be considered to have reached 100% participation for the school, we need still need 168 more members. Though we love every PTA member to volunteer, it is certainly not required of members to volunteer upon acquiring the membership. Membership invitation extends to not just one adult per household but to both parents, grandparents and community members for $7.50 per person. Please visit our PTA Website and scroll down to PTA Membership portion to join our PTA online. You can also download the Membership Form here to fill out and turn it into your child's teacher with a check payable to Spicewood PTA.

This time we are having a classroom PTA challenge to encourage parents to join the PTA. Each class that reaches 100% parent enrollment will win a pajama day.  If our campus reaches 100% parent participation, I will join in the celebration and wear my pajama’s, too! The deadline to be included in the classroom challenge is March 7thPartnership between parents and teachers is a critical component that impacts all children's learning at Spicewood ES. Involved parents and community understand the challenges schools face and become part of the solution. We need your support!

Meet the Faces of Spicewood #42: Megan McGowan

Here comes the third employee of the week to introduce to you all :)

Please take a moment to read about one of our fabulous interventionists, Mrs. Megan McGowan!

Mrs. McGowan is one of our interventionists/dyslexia specialist this school year. She was born in Lovelady, TX. She and her husband, Marshall, moved to Austin when he received a job offer. Mrs. McGowan has been teaching for 8 years at Spicewood, which is her entire teaching career so far. She's taught various grade levels- 4 years in kindergarten, 2 years in 2nd grade, 1 year in 3rd grade- which makes her a perfect fit for the position that she currently serves in with a wealth of instructional knowledge across all grade levels. Mrs. McGowan and her husband met in high school and have been together ever since! They together have two fabulous boys; Bryce is in 5th grade and Cade is in 2nd grade here at Spicewood. Unlike Mrs. Cain that was introduced just before Mrs. McGowan, sushi is her favorite food. Just like Mrs. Cain, she loves the color purple as well. She loves Love You Forever by Robert Munsch because it makes her think of her two boys and she loves reading it to them. :)

When asked what her favorite thing about working at Spicewood was, she replied, "the students! I love working with students and seeing their reaction when they understand a concept they have been struggling with. The daily hugs are also a perk of the job." She believes that the diverse student population and the ways students exhibit the IB attitudes and attributes make Spicewood such a wonderful place. She'd like to encourage our students to dream big and work hard!

I, too, love seeing the student reactions when I visit Mrs. McGowan and our students in her classroom. Strategies and skill specific lessons that Mrs. McGowan delivers to students truly make an enormous impact on students that she serves. Mrs. McGowan is also one of the most data driven educators I have ever worked with. Her dedication to student achievement and improvement pushes her to go above and beyond in serving our students in need. If you'd ever like to get organized but you need a pointer on how to do so, Mrs. McGowan will be go-to person! :)
Intervention Classroom

Do you see those blue bins? Each contains lesson plan and materials for each group she sees every day.

Meet the Faces of Spicewood #41: Wendy Cain

Dear blog audience,

Please meet the second employee of the week, Mrs. Wendy Cain, one of our fabulous kindergarten teachers!

Mrs. Cain was born in Plainview, TX. She and her husband, Brian, decided to move to Austin after their girls were born to be close to family. The couple have two beautiful daughters together. Brittany is a freshman at Westwood HS and Kendal is in 6th grade at Canyon Vista MS. She's proud that both girls are awesome swimmers. Before she landed in the world of Spicewood six years ago, she worked for a methodist church planning meetings and working with benefits. Whenever she was having meetings with others, all she really wanted to do was go play with the kids at the preschool, which prompted her to seek a teaching career path. Mrs. Cain loves all the food unless it's sushi or busy bread. She loves the color purple. Her favorite genre of literature is mysteries and she also likes any books written by John Green.

"I love living in the neighborhood and seeing students outside playing when I run. They cheer me on and will sometimes run with me!" shared Mrs. Cain. "I also love all the parents and teachers!" She'd like to tell our students to play hard, work hard and care for others.

When I visited Mrs. Cain's classroom this past week, students were transitioning into math. Mrs. Cain strategically already put students in certain groups to work on different sets of skills and activity while she took a group of students to explore coins. Soon after transition, all learners were fully engaged in their learning.

Top Left: Today's Question
Top Right & Bottom Left: Bump (Addition game)
Bottom Right: Math activities on computer

Students working on Problem Solving

Mrs. Cain and students exploring and making observations on different coins
Mrs. Cain is so patient and loving to all of her students. She has led students to create a safe and fun learning environment where they can take risks in their own learning. I love joining her class when she does a read-aloud of a picture book with her students!
