2013-2014 Final Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

We did it! This is my very last newsletter to everyone as we kick off the summer break. Your child received an End-of-Year letter from me, a final report card and STAAR Confidential Student Reports (only 3rd-5th Graders) in their Friday Folder. All students received a packet of MyOn Reading information as well. Spicewood wishes you all a fun and safe summer break! Thank you for being an amazing community of people!

Partner Appreciation "You Rock" Breakfast
We have had wonderful community support for the school year; our outstanding partners, youth volunteers, STARS mentors and volunteers were invited to a Partner Appreciation "You Rock" Breakfast for special recognition on May 23, 2014. I'd like to share the people who received recognition for our campus.

Partners of the Year: Spicewood PTA for their unending support
Volunteer of the Year: Robyn Steinhauser for heading up the Silent Auction and contributing hugely at the annual Carnival
Youth Volunteer of the Year: Spicewood's Roots and Shoots Club led by Mrs. Julie Jacobs (2nd Grade Teacher) & Ms. Jo Williams (4th Grade Teacher)
Mentor of the Year: Jean Campbell for mentoring a 4th grade student at Spicewood

5th Grade Promotion Ceremony
It was a proud day of celebrating promotion of our 5th grade students last Friday. Best wishes to our 5th graders for their future endeavors!

MyON Summer Reading Challenge

MyOn is an interactive digital library that the district is piloting this year  for Kinder - 5th grades. Students can go to and log in with "s" + their 6-digit student ID (s123456 for both username & password; "s" must be a lower case letter). Chrome is the preferred browser.

MyON digital books can also be downloaded to devices (up to 20 titles) but an interest inventory must be done first on a laptop or PC. Want to learn more about using MyON on mobile devices? Click here

There is a competition between all RRISD elementary schools to see which school logs the most minutes read over the summer. The winning school receives $1000.  ALL reading minutes, MyOn included, are to be included on the reading logs.

New Student Registration
Parents, if you know anyone around the neighborhood who has not registered their child(ren) for next school year, please encourage them to come and register them! Our registrar will be on duty till 11:30AM next Wednesday, June 11. This includes incoming kindergarten students and/or any new students moving into the area. This will give us a clearer picture of our enrollment for next school year.

School Supplies for Next Year
If you'd like to order school supplies, please refer to the Online Order Information placed in our eFolder.

5th Grade Flyer from Food Services
Please be sure to read the letter from Food Services to our 5th grade students on "What To Expect Next Year in the Cafeteria." It's an informative document that guides students and parents through the transition process from elementary to middle school.

Abatement of Asbestos
There will be an abatement of asbestos taking place in the 100s wing (1st and 2nd grade classrooms as well as the art room) this summer. The work will start as soon as the teachers are out of session for the summer. YMCA Summer Program has been moved to Jollyville ES this summer.
