Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

We had a great time celebrating Education: Go Get It Week last week. Thanks to all the parents who participated in Work Selfies! :) Our students spent a significant amount of time talking about importance of education, goal setting, their interest and talent and career options and choices. It was neat to imagine all of our youngsters becoming scientists, doctors, singers, professional ballet dancers, artists, and a principal! :) Yes, I have a little kindergarten friend who told me he is going to become a principal when he grows up. I told him to keep in touch! Thanks to our teachers who supported this week to be a success. BIG THANKS to Mrs. Hougham for making it happen!

We have a lot coming up this week yet again so please be sure to read through and mark you calendar! :)

Dear families and community members,

I want to thank those who have come out last Thursday night and learned more about what IB Education is. I know it was a rainy and stormy night that prevented many of our parents from participating. Please feel free to view the IB presentation that was shared at the meeting.

Celebrations

Breakfast with Dads
We had overwhelming participation of our fathers and students last Wednesday at our annual Breakfast with Dads event. Many father and father-figures strolled into our library early in the morning to enjoy time together. Spicewood is hoping that it doesn't stop here at the one-time event but that we will continue to see many dads as mentors, guest speakers, and volunteers at Spicewood throughout the school year!

Spicewood Celebrates International Dot Day

Spicewood students celebrated another year of International Dot Day. September 15 has been designated as the International Dot Day this year. The International Dot Day started with a story called the Dot, written by Peter H. Reynolds. The book was awarded the Carnegie Medal in 2006. The author speaks through the story in his effort to inspire and promote creativity. Our students were given an opportunity to use an innovative app called the colAR on iPads in our Next Gen Classroom guided by Mrs. Raybourn. This app transforms a 2-D figure dot into a 3-D figure sphere. For more pictures, please visit our art teacher's blog

Parking Lot Safety- Message from Hope Church
Please enter in the area designated as the entrance and exit in the area designated at the exit.  We have also had some reports of parents driving too fast.Thank you for keeping children’s safety our number one priority.

Driving Safety
Parents, I fully understand that it can be very frustrating in the mornings and afternoons when you try to get your child(ren) to and from school through very heavy traffic around the campus. We had several incidents last week that concern the safety of our community: drivers driving too fast, making a U-Turn to cut in line to get into our circle drive, blocking other parent's vehicle to make illegal turn, and exchange of words between drivers with student(s) in the car. Our students are looking up to all of us to find integrity, respect, effective communication, tolerance and empathy- all the IB Learner Profile Attributes and PYP Attitudes our students learn about and practice at school. Safety of our students and stakeholders is always our highest priority. Please slow down and abide by all traffic rules. Thank you for being supportive to keep our school community safe.

Breakfast with Dads
There will be a Breakfast with Dad event hosted by Spicewood WatchDOGS (Dads Of Great Students) in the library this Wednesday, September 17, starting at 7:15AM. Any father/father figure can join us with their child(ren). Spicewood encourages all fathers/father figures to be visibly involved in our school community. Students will be dismissed to their classroom at 7:45AM.

Please attend the PTA general membership meeting this Thursday, September 18 from 6:30-7:30pm in the school library. Our guest speaker will be Ms. Doriane Marvel, Spicewood Elementary’s IB coordinator. She will talk about what makes an IB education different and how the PYP skills your children are learning at school can be utilized for a lifetime.  Ms. Marvel will be taking questions at the completion of her presentation.  Please check out this eflyer for more information.

Literacy Library Training
The Spicewood literacy library contains books and readers that our teachers use in classroom reading groups and at home for extra reading practice.  PTA will be holding 3 training opportunities next week- 9/15, 9/16 and 9/19- on how the literacy library is organized.  If you plan to volunteer in the literacy library during the school year (either as a general PTA volunteer or as a classroom volunteer), please check out the homepage of the Literacy Library for the times of training.  You are only required to attend one training and the training will last no more than 30 minutes.  Feel free to contact Staci Vagner (srvagner@yahoo.com) if you have any questions.

Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

Thank you students, parents and teachers for an amazing start of the new school year! As we head into the month of September, we have many events and important dates to mark on our calendar. Spicewood appreciates all the support we receive from all stakeholders.

Celebrations

Spicewood Teachers & Staff Participate in ALS Donation Challenge
Spicewood staff and teachers participated in ALS Donation Drive & Ice Bucket Challenge last week. Teachers and staff raised $727.00 to donate to ALS Association just in 2 days. In an effort to conserve water in this drought season and minding others around the world without clean water to drink, Mrs. Kim took on the Ice Bucket Challenge as a campus representative. Spicewood would like to dedicate this Donation Drive & Ice Bucket Challenge to our very own student, Loghan Smith, and her family. (Mrs. Kim received permission from Mrs. Smith to disclose family name).

This Week's News

Principal’s Blog
All the updates and information I share via School Messenger will also be updated on my blog at http://spicewoodprincipal.blogspot.com/ I will also update my blog with stories and reflections as the year goes on.

First Day Packet If you haven't already done so, please make sure to return all the signed forms to your child’s homeroom teacher this week.

Student Arrival
School doors open at 7:20AM when staff members are on duty. If students are not in their classroom, students will be counted as tardy starting at 7:45AM.

For the first 2 weeks of school (August 26-September 5), parents are allowed to walk their child(ren) all the way to their classrooms. This is a friendly reminder that starting on Monday, September 8, parents are asked to drop off their child(ren) at the front entrance of the school.

Students in Portables- Arrival Procedure
4th and 5th grade students in portables must enter through the front/main entrance of the school in the morning just as all other students at Spicewood. Please do not send your child(ren) directly to the portables. It's a safety concern as our teachers are not on duty till 7:25AM to receive students.

No Use of Staff Parking Lot At All Times
We have had some parents drop off their child(ren) using the staff parking lot in the morning. This is a friendly reminder that no students or parents are allowed in the staff parking lot at all times for safety. Our teachers drive through the lot and park their cars in the mornings in order to get to their classrooms in time to receive students. It startles our staff/teachers when student(s) jump out in front of their car. We would like to proactively prevent any students and/or parents getting injured. I'm attaching the map I shared a few weeks ago regarding Drop-off/Dismissal Procedure.

Dismissal- Safety Concern
Parents, during dismissal, sometimes students are grabbed by parents out of class line as the class is in the process of heading outside. This prevents teachers from knowing by whom students are picked up and creates much anxiety. Please wait until students arrive at the portico area and make sure to acknowledge child's teacher, either by making an eye contact or speaking with them briefly, as you pick up your student. We want to ensure safety of each child by making sure students are dismissed properly to parents/guardians, not strangers.

Once you pick up your child(ren), we ask that everyone clears out of the front entrance area. We'd like to keep the front portico area circulating at all times to alleviate congestion.

No Parking on Olson Dr.
Parents, on Olson Drive there is a section for only Stop-and-Go drop-off/pick-up. It's critical that parents do not park on Olson Drive during drop-off in the AM & pick-up in the PM. It causes much traffic congestion.

Spicewood Open House Night: Parent Orientation
All parents/guardians are invited to attend our Annual Open House Night. This is an opportunity to see your child(ren)'s learning environment and hear great things happening in each classroom. Please view the Open House Schedule for further information.

Breakfast with Dads
There will be a Breakfast with Dad event hosted by Spicewood WatchDOGS (Dads Of Great Students) in the library on Wednesday, September 17 starting at 7:15AM. Any father/father figure can join us with their child(ren). Spicewood encourages all fathers/father figures to be visibly involved in our school community. Students will be dismissed to their classroom at 7:45AM.

YMCA Parents- Back Parking Lot
Parents of YMCA After-School Program, we have lost several parking spaces in the back as we have brought in a new portable. Please be mindful of duration of parking time when picking up your child(ren) from YMCA After-School Program; our teachers usually stay late to work beyond what's required of them.

Austin Family Magazine: Young Writers Contest
Austin Family Magazine is hosting its annual Young Writers Contest, with short essay entries being accepted August 15 through October 15, 2014. The contest is open to all fourth and fifth grade students attending any public, private, or home school. For detailed information, please visit their official website or view the flyer in eFolder.

Chess Club Registration Open
Chess Club registration is now open on the Chess Club PTA page. Please click here to register your child(ren).

Math Pentathlon
