Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

This week is designated as the Red Ribbon Week; students will participate in various activities and lessons that will teach them strategies on how to live a healthy and happy life. Throughout the week, students can participate in Spirit Days to show their commitment to living a happy and healthy life as a balanced person.

Celebrations

How The World Works: Science Assembly hosted by UT Physics Dept.
Our students had a wonderful time at the How The World Works Science Assembly last Monday. It was a fun, interactive and engaging session for all students to see changes in states of matter affect physical properties of objects. Students also observed occurrence of chemical reactions when different gases/liquids were combined in a contained space. We are so thankful for Mrs. Marvel, Mrs. Karen Trenk (PTA) and the UT Physics Department volunteers for making this awesome learning experience happen at Spicewood!

Digital Citizenship Week
Our students explored various learning experiences to gain knowledge and understanding about digital citizenship, aligned to transdisciplinary themes such as How We Expess Ourselves and How The World Works. Thanks to teachers and Mrs. Haney, our wonderful Instructional Technology Specialist (ITS), for collaborating and creating meaningful learning moments for our students! Enjoy the video our Art Club students created as well as some pictures of our students in action!

We have a lot to celebrate and a lot to look forward to! Happy Monday!

Celebrations

Every student, teacher, and staff member at Spicewood agreed to the No Place for Hate Resolution of Respect and on a paper link chain wrote one action they will perform to show they deeply care for others this year. At Spicewood, we band together to make our school No Place for Hate and instead a place for Deep Care! Parents - please come add a chain link - directions are at the front of our school! Kudos to Mrs. Hougham, our wonderful counselor for implementing this!

This Week's News

Flu Prevention Campus Initiative
Parents, flu season is fast approaching and we must prepare in order to minimize sickness among our students, staff and families. In an effort to do so, I ask that parents please send in hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes to school with your child to turn into their teacher. In classrooms, we'll be educating our students on washing hands, using sanitizers frequently when you can't wash your hands, wiping down doorknobs and items touched by many, and staying home when they're sick.

Digital Citizenship Week This Week!
In order to educate and prepare our students to be responsible digital citizens of the world, our teachers and Instructional Technology Specialist, Mrs. Haney, have collaboratively planned a full week of Digital Citizenship Week! Please view the Digital Citizenship Activities document placed in the electronic Friday folder to see what awesome learning experiences our students will be receiving this week! For more information, please visit the Technology blog: Getting IT Right.

School Starts at 7:45AM
It is so very important that our students are in the classroom by 7:45AM each morning. There is a lot that teachers do with our students between 7:45AM-8:00AM in order to maximize learning opportunities. Please make sure students arrive at school early enough to be in their learning environment before the tardy bell at 7:45AM. After first 9-week, I plan to generate a report with student names with excessive tardies and make a personal phone call home.

Annual Giving Campaign
We want to thank all Spicewood families that participated in the Kick Off Cook Off and also the families that came out to enjoy the festivities. The Annual Giving Campaign is off to a fast start, we started receiving contributions as early as Tuesday morning. Please remember to send your envelopes back regardless of donation amount. Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

I hope all students and families are enjoying the long weekend as well as the rain! Meanwhile, our staff and teachers are using the day to further educate ourselves on IB Programme and learn more about effective formative assessments to utilize in the classrooms. Our teachers never stop being life-long learners and we hope to grow continuously in our knowledge and instructional skills to better serve our students!

We have a big KICK OFF COOK OFF event this Wednesday, October 15! We'd love to see all of our students and parents come out and have a blast! I look forward to seeing you all! :)

Celebrations

PROS from Westwood HS
I wanted to take a moment to recognize and thank our PROS from Westwood HS. They come out to Spicewood ES twice a week, volunteering their precious time to meet with different students to mentor. I've witnessed them in action with students and it's truly a blessing to see Spicewood students loving the time they spend reading with them. Kudos to the PROS! We appreciate you!
Thank you for your dedication, Westwood PROS!

Spicewood Atrium Featured as Special Space in RRISD
The Spicewood Elementary atrium features a fully functioning ecosystem to allow students to complete hands-on science lessons in a controlled environment. The area houses a variety of rescued animals, including six turtles, and fish that live in the pond. Multiple frogs were also brought into the atrium as an organic solution to eliminate pests in the area. Because of the unique place within the elementary school, students are able to learn how to care for animals and take an active role in feeding fish and turtles after lessons are complete. The district has featured it as one of the Special Spaces in RRISD. Please take a moment to watch the video and visit the website for more pictures and information. Thanks to Mrs. Bell for representing Spicewood so eloquently!

Another living proof that Atrium is a great learning place; Second grade is studying Sharing the Planet and we are connecting in Art!  On Friday second grade students practiced drawing from observation in the Spicewood Atrium under Mrs. Raybourn's guidance.

Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

We certainly had a very busy week last week with the annual Book Fair and the KISS Cook-Out. Both events turned out to be huge successes! We had a number of visitors and special guests throughout the week and loved seeing them all! Spicewood students and staff feel very fortunate to have such involved families and continuous support from the community.

Celebrations

Spicewood Annual Book Fair
Yet again Spicewood pulled together a great Book Fair last week! This year's book fair had a record-breaking year and there simply are not enough words to express our gratitude. THANK YOU to all the fearless volunteers who gave their time, THANK YOU to all the fabulous visitors who shopped the fair, and THANK YOU to everyone who purchased books for donation to Book Spring. It’s the boundless generosity of this community that helps make the Spicewood Elementary Library one of the best libraries in the district. Our final numbers are still trickling in, and we will post the library’s profit on the Book Fair page as soon as we have completed our calculations. Also, we have some fantastic pictures on the Book Fair page (including one of myself in the stockades) hope you have time to check them out. Here's a few. :)

Kids Invite Someone Special (K.I.S.S) Cook-Out
Spicewood hosted hundreds of special guests this past Friday to KISS Cook-Out. It was a great way for kids to invite someone special and build a memorable moment together. The weather couldn't have been more perfect! I hope everyone that came had a wonderful time visiting our special students. We could not have had such a smooth Cook-Out without our awesome parent volunteers and their support. Kudos to those who volunteered! We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful community.

Peer Mediation Available at Spicewood
One of our IB transdisciplinary social skills is conflict resolution. At Spicewood, we work each and every day to help students become conflict resolvers and problem solvers. The Spicewood Peer Mediators is a group of trained fifth grade students helping students to solve conflicts in a peaceful way. Our Peer Mediators are nominated because of their caring hearts, excellent listening skills, and desire to make Spicewood a more peaceful place. If students are having a conflict, they can request peer mediation. Teachers can request a mediation for two students as well. Once a mediation is requested and both students agree to come together in a peaceful way to resolve their conflict, two of our fifth grade mediators will walk them through their conflict by listening to both sides of the story, finding out what each student needs to feel okay about the situation, and finding out how students are willing to work to solve the problem. Ultimately, mediators try to support the students into coming up with a win-win agreement and learn to resolve conflicts on their own in the future.
