Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

I hope everyone is staying dry. Despite the rainy days, we've had a wonderful week at Spicewood last week. Many of our families came out to enjoy the art work of our fabulous student artists last Thursday! Field Day is rescheduled to take its place on Thursday, May 28 so be sure to sign up to volunteer if you can. We have another busy week ahead so please be sure to mark your calendar!

Celebrations

Spicewood Represents at RRISD Technology Showcase
Spicewood's Next Generation Digital Art Classroom was on display last week at the First Annual Round Rock ISD Outerlimits Tech Showcase. Mrs. Raybourn showcased student artwork that was created as part of their PYP units of inquiry using various iPad apps. We were joined by students from around the district who were demonstrating their amazing work in robotics, coding, Minecraft, 3D printing, and more! It was a great turnout and we enjoyed speaking with many district leaders, parents, and students.

Family Gallery Night
We had a huge turn out last Thursday with many families that came out to celebrate all of our artists and their amazing work! Family Gallery Night is featured under IB PYP 101 section this week, written by Mrs. Raybourn, our wonderful art teacher who made this event a great success along with Mrs. Deb.

IB PYP 101

Role of Fine Arts in IB PYP (Written by Mrs. Raybourn, Art Teacher)
The role of the Fine Arts in the IB PYP is to encourage risk taking, critical thinking and creativity. The Spicewood Visual Arts program is a process based program placing the primary importance on student inquiry, exploration of new materials and creative problem solving.  Through this approach we hope to educate resilient critical thinkers who understand that the creative process is one of many mistakes, reflection, commitment and outside of the box thinking.

The PYP encourages teacher collaboration to support the six yearly Units of Inquiry. The Spicewood Visual Arts program supports two Units of Inquiry per grade level per year. These opportunities help Spicewood students to further investigate and respond creatively to inquiry in the primary classroom.  Events throughout the year including first grades Day of Expression, fifth grades Exhibition as well as Gallery and Family Art Night allow students to showcase these creative connections and reflect on personal growth over the course of time.

Celebrations

2015 PBS KIDS Writers Contest Winner
Two years in a row, Spicewood is proud to present a winner for the 2015 PBS KIDS Writers Contest. Prima Changwatchai in second grade has placed 3rd amongst all second grade participants! We're so proud of her accomplishment!

Spring Conferences
Many of our parents filled the halls and classrooms last Wednesday to participate in the student-led Spring Conferences. We appreciate everyone's partnership in education for our students here at Spicewood. I'm sure it was a proud day for all of our students and parents as they celebrated the learning of our students together!

4th Grade Concert
Our proud 4th grade students put on a show for the rest of the school last Thursday during school hours and then for parents and families in the evening. They did an awesome job singing to move the hearts of those in the audience, and they sure did! We're so proud of their hard work. Big thanks to Ms. De Los Santos for guiding our students in this journey of expression.

IB PYP 101

5th Grade Exhibition Vol.4-Final
This is finally the final volume on 5th Grade Exhibition! Our 5th grade students showcased all of their final products last Wednesday all so proudly! We had many guests in the house from in and out of the district as well as parents and families!

Each of our student has explored various historic and current events, discovered an issue that spoke to his/her heart, connected the event and issue to create an inspirational message to impact those around them and possibly initiate action. The beauty of this process is that students used everything they have learned from the PYP framework journey- PYP attitudes, Learner Profile Attributes, Concepts and Transdisciplinary Skills all through the lense of Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves- to make their final product in the hopes that it'll inspire others.

To make it a bit more tangible, I want to provide you with an example.
This student named Trent picked out the Doomsday as the event that he wanted to explore. He was able to share much information about the event and connected to his chosen issue of war and the after math of war on humans. He then expressed himself by playing cello in front of audience. As I was listening to his performance, at first, I thought to myself, he must be playing a piece of music that portrays the sadness of the Doomsday. Then I got curious so I asked him what his expression meant. In Trent's own words, "I know that the soldiers that fought in the war probably felt so scared and out of their comfort zone away from their homes to save the world. I don't ever perform in front of others but I felt that this would push me out of my comfort zone just like the soldiers." Oh My Goodness! My jaw dropped and I truly teared up. Yes, I am a proud principal. How can you not be? So inspirational! This is one of over 140 exhibition products of our students. My jaw never closed throughout the exhibition last Wednesday morning.

Here are some pictures of our students in action. Exhibition Day is truly a huge celebration of learning for all of us in the community.

Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

It'll be another busy week, everyone! Our 5th grade students are taking a half-day trip to Canyon Vista MS this morning to learn more about the campus, which will prepare them for a smooth transition to the middle school. This Wednesday is a big day of Celebrations of Learning with 5th Grade Exhibition & Spring Conferences after an Early Release. It's also a week to show appreciation to our teachers and our school nurse. We look forward to seeing many of you this Wednesday!

Celebrations

Spicewood Receives Highest Membership Award from Texas PTA
We're proud to announce that Spicewood ES received another year of Platinum Membership Award from Texas PTA this school year- the highest membership award there is. We are one of two schools in the entire district to be recognized. This means that the number of Spicewood PTA members are equal to or greater than the number of students enrolled at our school. This also means we have a great community of people who are committed to support our children at Spicewood. Special thanks goes to Mrs. Kate Hardin for her hard work as a PTA Membership Chair this year!

Walk to School Day: Sharing the Planet Week
Many of our students walked/carpooled/biked to school last Thursday to celebrate and honor Spare the Air Day! Our hope is that this does not stop as a one-day event but that we continue to make efforts and walk, carpool or bike to school to go green for our environment!

IB PYP 101

2nd Grade Market Day
Our 2nd grade students have been exploring through the Unit of Inquiry: How We Organize Ourselves with a central idea that states, people work to meet personal, financial and societal needs. Students have been learning about the factors that influence our spending, the relationship between consumers and producers and how work provides for our needs and wants. Teachers facilitated many discussions and learning opportunities with questions such as What is an economic system?; How does a free market system work?; How do economic systems help people meet their needs?; How is work related to goods, services, needs, and wants?; Why do people choose a job(s)?

After researching about various jobs and consumer/producer relations as well as interviewing their own parents, students created a good to sell to their classmates. They had to create a business plan, price products, create an ad, and a flowchart showing how their product was made.   Students were given play currency, and could decide if they wanted to barter or purchase the goods. Students then were asked to write about their experience as a producer and a consumer and the economic system they chose as their final assessment.

These products that students planned and created over a few weeks of their learning journey was sold last Tuesday at the 2nd Grade Market in the cafeteria to staff and other students! Some products were so popular that the producers had to take back-order requests from consumers. :) With this experience, our students have a better understanding of how our economy system works!
