Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community,

It's hard to believe that we are at the tail end of April already! This Wednesday is Administrative Professional Day. If you get a chance, please feel free to let our office staff know that their hard work is appreciated!

Celebrations

Spicewood Student Council Meeting
Leaders of our student body held an official Student Council Meeting last Tuesday to discuss important matters regarding the school. We're proud of our student leaders who collaborate, reflect and lead decision making processes to bring positive impact around the school community. Thanks to Mr. Ortiz and Mrs. Robinson for leading the group!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

Every spring our fifth graders participate in a culminating project called Exhibition. Exhibition is a final celebration of the PYP program, proving students with an opportunity to reflect on the essential elements of the program- knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action. The students take the ultimate action with their own personal inquiry as they reflect on themselves as an IB student as well as a summative assessment, or culminating project. This inquiry project involves students identifying, investigating and offering solutions (or action) to real life issues or problems (the issue matters to students and affects their life in way or another).

And while the project is completed in fifth grade, we have our entire staff contribute to this exciting unit as they support and mentor our students throughout the reflection process.  So far, our mentors have met with students to review their PYP portfolios to see how far they have come as an IB learner and another session about the Learner Profile Attributes and how they add further value to what they learn in the classroom. This last week, the students met with their mentors for a third time to discuss and reflect the transdisicplinary skills, valuable skills that support the 21st century learner.

Reflecting on these skills even before students begin their own personal inquiries is essential to this culminating PYP experience as students evaluate their personal strengths and weaknesses, setting goals and brainstorming different ways students may use these skills during the Exhibition inquiry. We look forward to seeing what inspiring action our students come up with!

Optional Parent Input Form Due May 6
Optional Parent Input Form has been placed in the electronic Friday Folder. I ask that all parents respect the expertise of our staff and leadership and not request a specific teacher for your child. To briefly explain how class lists are made, we first begin with grade level team teachers getting together and placing them in groups for next school year as they know their students and their needs best. Then we come together at a faculty meeting and we go through a refining process again vertically. Leadership then refines the lists several times over the summer based on student services, needs and teachers' certifications/specialties to best serve all of our 825 students. The form is due Friday, May 6 to your child's teacher or the front office. No late forms will be accepted.

For 5th Grade Parents ONLY- CVMS School Supplies for 2016-2017
Save time and order your school supplies online.  The list has been teacher approved and each supply pack will be delivered directly to the school for pickup during student days in August.  We will only do online orders for school supplies.  CVMS will not be able to sell school supply packs at student days.

Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community,

We had a great Spring Carnival last Friday; the weather was beautiful and couldn't be more perfect for our families to enjoy some fun together. It is projected to rain for the next few days so please leave your home a little bit earlier than usual for the drop off in the morning in anticipation of heavier traffic congestion.

Celebrations

Annual Spring Carnival
Our Spring Carnival was a huge success! We had so many of our own families join us as well as our community members. Big thanks to PTA Chairs- Stephanie Engles & Sandy Parent- who put in countless hours preparing for the event to make it a success! Please enjoy the pictures.

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

At the heart of our PYP program lies the Learner Profile. The attributes help develop internationally minded students who, in turn, help to create a better and more peaceful world.  All learning and instruction are developed to foster these traits and our teachers do an excellent job referring to these traits throughout the day as they acknowledge student action or make connections in literature to characters who exhibit these traits. We encourage all families to use these words at home too, further reinforcing what's at the heart of the program.
During Education Go Get It Week, our counselor, Mrs. Hougham, challenged our students to think about the learner profile attributes in connection to their plans for their future careers. At home, students were asked to illustrate themselves in their future career and think about what attributes may be needed in that chosen career path.
This learning experience gave students the opportunity to make connections between an essential element in the PYP program to the real world, further solidifying the value in what our amazing staff and teachers do here at Spicewood!

Take a look at how other IB schools across the country make connections to these attributes!

Celebrations

Golf In Schools in PE
We have had an amazing week here with Golf In Schools. The kids were able to practice their putting, small swings as well as big swings.  Teams worked together to gain points and  were even given opportunities to hit their teacher (all in a very controlled environment.) The positive attitudes and efforts by everyone has been so fun to watch and see . Students had such a great time and so much success. Thank you for volunteering your time and talent, Golf In Schools!

Math Pentathalon K-1 Tournament
We are excited to share with you the results for the k-1 tournament for MP held on April 2. We had a total of 12 kids participate in the tournament. All the kids did an excellent job at the tournament. They went with a smile to play each game. No matter if they won or lost the game, they played fair, respected the opponent and were a good sport.
We had 5 kids who got honorable mention and 3 won a medal. The name of the medalists are Varun Sanghavi- Gold medal( hall of fame); Reet Akluah- Silver; and Nishka Gupta- Bronze. Congratulations!

1st Grade Program- How Does Your Garden Grow?
First graders did an amazing job with their music performance on April 7th!  How Does Your Garden Grow? was connected to “How the World Works,” an IB Transdisciplinary Theme. In their classrooms and in the music room, first graders learned that cycles are predictable and help us understand the world around us.

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

With their central idea, Cycles are predictable and help us understand the world around us, our first grade has been doing lots of exploring over the past week! Students inquired about different types of cycles found in our world and asked questions about how cycles were related or connected with one another.

Teachers brought in tadpoles to each classroom for students to observe, investigate, and find out more about life cycles. Using their science notebooks, students began documenting their observations with careful notes and illustrations.
Many students noted the small legs that were already starting to form on their class tadpoles, but also wondered why or how these tadpoles could be so large! With inquiry, the teachers encourage the questioning, prediction and wondering about the learning experiences in the classroom. The class decided that a little research was needed in order to answer their questions and properly document their scientific inquiry. After a little investigation, they learned about different characteristics of frogs (long legs, smooth skin, smaller) and toads (larger, short legs) and made an initial prediction that their tadpole might grow into a bullfrog.
Students will continue to record their observations throughout the next few weeks, reevaluating their initial prediction and asking more questions. Be sure to stop by first grade and check out their growing tadpoles!

Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community,

It's hard to believe we're heading into the month of April! These next two months of school are critical for all of us as there will still be much of rigorous teaching and learning happening at Spicewood. We appreciate all the support from home. By the way, art teachers are still in need of newspapers! :)

Celebrations

Cub Scout Beautifies Spicewood

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

A few weeks ago we held a morning coffee meet and greet session for our upcoming Kindergarten parents. During the session, parents were able to meet the leadership team, learn about the history of Spicewood, and hear more about how the IB program provides students with a unique education foundation. And while these parents and students and just beginning their journey into an IB education, I thought it would be a perfect time to share some resources for parents available on the IB Organization website! The main parent page has helpful videos and information about the IB Continuum (PYP, MYP and DP programmes all offered here at Round Rock ISD).

I've linked a a few videos below that exemplify just how special an IB education is. Feel free to explore and learn more about what's going on in the classrooms here!
