Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community,

The final week of the school year is here! Our fifth grade students will participate in a Promotion Ceremony tomorrow and Westwood HS Seniors will be here to walk our halls to inspire our little ones. What a proud day we will celebrate together! As we close this school year, we are sad to say farewell to many teachers leaving us for various reasons such as retirement, new career advancement opportunities, and family transitions. We say farewell to our retiring teachers: Mrs. Pam Kadgihn (Kinder), Mrs. Sharon Lavery (Kinder), Mrs. Deby Steinburg (1st), Mrs. Janice Vanzura (1st), Mrs. Devlin Ready (2nd), Mrs. Kathy Skagen (Special Ed.), Mr. Kerry Parks (Special Ed.). Miss Lora Vechan (3rd) has been accepted to transfer to the new STEAM Academy in our district. Mrs. Ashley Jarmusch (3rd) will teach 5th grade at Sommer ES. Mrs. Megan McGowan will serve as an Assistant Principal at Canyon Vista MS. We also say farewell to Mrs. Meredith Beich (5th) and Ms. Kathy Von Hatten (Special Ed. EA) as they take on personal transitions in life. They will truly be missed! Please take an opportunity to thank these teachers this week.

Celebrations

2016 Campus Volunteer of the Year
For the last two years, Mrs. Engels has been a vital part of our school community. She volunteered countless hours to make major events such as Silent Auction and Spring Carnival happen with a great success. Her commitment and dedication to this school community is hugely appreciated by all stakeholders.

2016 Campus Partner of the Year
Spicewood PTA has once again done an amazing job for the school this year by raising beyond imaginable amount of funds to support IB, technology and enrichment at Spicewood. We're so lucky to have such a great partner in education.

2016 Campus Youth Volunteer of the Year
Roots and Shoots is an organization started by Jane Goodall. Students and teacher sponsors- Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Jacobs- in the club do projects throughout the year to help our community, school, and the environment as global citizens. To name just a couple contributions from this year, they've planted flowers in the school yard and cleaned the Shoal Creek to help our community.

2016 Campus Mentor of the Year

Mr. Skip Clark has been serving as a mentor to our student. He's built a meaningful relationship with his mentee and it has greatly impacted our student academically, socially and emotionally. We're very grateful for his service.

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.
Last week our fifth graders concluded their final PYP year with their culminating exhibition projects. We had an overwhelming response in attendance from district administration, other local PYP schools, and of course our community! A huge congratulations goes out to all of our fifth graders and their teachers for their hard work delving into deep concepts and topics, in turn inspiring their audience to take ACTION (do, think, say, feel, be, have). Take a glimpse at just a few of the projects below!
Thank you for a great first year at Spicewood! I appreciate all of your e-mailed questions and feedback throughout the year to make these weekly posts meaningful and informative to our community. The IB PYP 101 section will resume when we return in the fall. In the meantime you can take a look at our updated IB Program page for some helpful links, photos, and videos!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

Using an event in history to drive their inquiries, the fifth graders are feverishly working on their exhibition projects. Doing research, speaking to members of the community, and collaborating with their peers allows the students to take a closer look at the issue or theme at the event that pulls at their "heart strings". Collectively, the students will take action (a key component to the PYP program, especially exhibition) as a result of their learning through a variety of creative expressions including animation, mini board games, bucket list challenges, info graphics, or other artistic modes.

In preparation of the event, students submitted invitations to send out to other IB schools, Round Rock ISD administration and our Spicewood community. From Powtoons to collaborative illustrations, there were over a dozen risk-taking and creative student submissions for the contest! Check out the winning submission below!

We'll share more about the students working in their classrooms in next week's post. We invite our community to come check out this exciting event on Wednesday, May 25th!

Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community,

We would like to thank all the parents who participated in the Spring Conferences as well as the kindergarten concert last week. Our 3rd-5th grade students will be taking the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) tests starting today through Wednesday of this week. Spicewood does not shut down campus on the testing days for visitors; however, lunch schedules are altered so please speak with your child's teacher for a possible change. I'd like to also emphasize again that STAAR does not define who our students are. It certainly does not measure the uniqueness and strengths of each child. Please encourage your child to take a deep breath and take the assessments with confidence and trust in themselves that they have been well-prepared up to this point.

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

Students learn best when provided with tools that allow them to express their unique ideas in a variety of ways. In most PYP classrooms, you'll find lots of class discussion, student collaboration, and opportunities for students to extend and challenge their original thoughts and ideas.

Last week in Kindergarten, our students were concluding their Sharing the Planet unit. While most units end with a whole class discussion to debrief the big ideas, followed by a written reflection, Ms. Bliven decided to try a new approach with her class, challenging their thinking and ideas about the unit utilizing the Visible Thinking Routine called: Color, Symbol, Image. This is a routine designed to push students (even those in Kindergarten!) to think metaphorically. Metaphors allow students to make deeper connections from one thing to another.

In their Sharing the Planet, Kindergarten delves into resources, living things (think life cycles, etc.), how these are both related to one another, as well as what our responsibility is towards both living on nonliving things on our planet (how we share the planet).  Take a close look at how these students drew new conclusions based on their learning experiences:

Visible Thinking Routines such as Color, Symbol, Image are a powerful way to engage and tap into the complex ideas that our students have due to the rich learning environment! Check out how other Spicewood classrooms use similar routines to make student thinking come alive.

Celebrations

Austin Lyric Opera Enriches Learning Experiences
Last Friday we had Austin Lyric Opera come and sing for our students. The halls were filled with sweet sound of music and our students were enamored with the performance. Thanks to Mrs. Vance [IB Coordinator] and Mrs. Trenk [PTA] for organizing such a great learning experience for our students!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

When learning about and through the different subject areas, student acquire particular skills related to that subject. In language arts, students become literate as they are exposed to text through a variety of genres, meanwhile in math, students become numerate as they begin to master place value, for example. And in order to conduct meaningful and authentic inquiry (and lifelong learners!) within the classroom, the IB philosophy supports transdisciplinary teaching and learning, or teaching and learning relevant to all of the subject areas.

Interwoven in 2nd grade's How We Express Ourselves unit, our students inquire about how People work to meet personal, financial, and societal needs (the unit's central idea). Students learned about the characteristics of persuasive texts in Language Arts, how producers and consumers are interdependent within a society in Social Studies, addition and subtraction of money, and spending and saving (financial literacy TEKS) in Math

The unit ends with our annual Market Day, a culmination and synthesis of all of the transdisciplinary learning that took place over the past six weeks. The students are required to create a product and advertisement to be on display for sale on Market Day. Students learn the value of spending and saving their Spicewood Dollars as they haggle for a variety of homemade goods including picture frames, flower pots, lightsabers, jewelry, etc.

After Market Day, students returned to their classrooms to debrief about the activity, reflect on their experience, and make further connections back to their subject-related learning. What a meaningful and memorable transdisciplinary unit!
