IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

We're following up last week's PYP 101 section with a quick share out and celebration of the amazing #PeaceDay actions that took place on our campus. Our teachers brainstormed ideas with their students, tweeted student actions and spread an overall message of peace throughout our campus using posters, poems, and class songs or chants. We hope you feel just as inspired to spread this global mindset!

Be sure to follow @SpicewoodPYP on twitter to stay up to date on all of the amazing student action happening on our campus!

Career Exploration at Spicewood- Message from Counselor
At Spicewood, we are always looking for ways to get our students thinking about their future. At the elementary level students don't need to know exactly what type of education they're going to get after high school yet or what exact career path they're going to follow, but we do want to allow our students to explore the possibilities of all of the educational and career opportunities out there. This year, we would love to have our parents help with this education and career exploration by participating in our Spicewood Parent Career Spotlight. If you'd like to participate, please fill in the Spicewood Parent Career Spotlight Handout and send it in to school to Mrs. Hougham, our counselor, along with one or more pictures of you at your place of work. Mrs. Hougham will be displaying different Parent Career Spotlights each week on a bulletin board all year long.

Additionally, we know that our Spicewood parents are a wonderful resource of varying educational and career backgrounds. We would love to compile a list of parents who would be willing to share their knowledge about their career field or area of expertise with our students. Volunteers could potentially present to a class about a topic that correlates with their unit of inquiry, support a small group of students as they learn more about an area of interest, simply be available to answer questions through email about certain educational topics, or more! Our goal is to create a list staff members can access to provide meaningful connections for our students as well as allow them to continue to explore opportunities available after graduation. If you'd like to add your information to be a potential resource for our staff members, please complete our "Share your Expertise with our Students" Form.

Thank you in advance for helping our students begin to see the wide range of educational and career opportunities available! At Spicewood, we DREAM BIG!

Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

We had a great turn out at the Breakfast with Dads event last Wednesday morning! We always welcome and love the presence of dads and father-figures in our school. Thanks to the parents who attended the board meeting last Thursday. I am grateful for your active advocacy shared in a respectful and caring manner. We are the proud Spicewood Panthers!

Celebrations

Breakfast with Dads
Thanks to all the dads and father-figures that came out early Wednesday morning to grab a bite with our students and learn about WatchDOGS and how to get involved. We appreciate you and your support! Thanks to many dads that have donated donuts, fruits, paper goods and drinks to make this a successful one! Big thanks to Mr. Patrick Hall for organizing the event and to Mrs. Haney, our ITS who helped with iPads for sign-ups.

Marathon Kids Kick-Off
Last Friday our entire body of students participated in the Marathon Kids Kick-Off event in PE. Each individual ran 4 laps around the track which equals to a mile. Many of our students persevered and chose to run many more than what was asked of them! We're so proud!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

What is a PYP school?

To put it simply, it strives to develop an internationally minded person.

As a PYP school, Spicewood “aspires to be a community of caring, global-minded thinkers” (our school’s vision) by providing students with a variety of learning experiences in the classroom that expose them to different cultures and parts of the world. This allows our children to empathize with people, in turn, creating an intercultural openness and understanding that ultimately gives them tools to get involved and change the world.
The concept of global-mindedness  is not limited to the four walls of the classroom, it radiates throughout the building! Our Spanish programs teach language through cultures that speak Spanish and Specials teachers teach their disciplines with a global focus as well. Our campus also celebrate International days, further promoting awareness of our global community.
On Wednesday, September 21st, our campus will be celebrating International Day of Peace. On this day, people from all over the world promote the global mindset of peace.

This year, our campus will be sharing a variety of videos with our students, creating art pieces and having class discussions about this important global idea. Be sure to follow @SpicewoodPYP on Twitter to see how our campus is taking action and spreading the word about peace or take the Great Kindness Challenge with your family and spread more peace in our community!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

At the heart of all IB programmes (PYP, MYP, DP) lies the Learner Profile. You'll hear our classroom teachers using the attributes to give feedback to students, our school counselor, Mrs. Hougham, embedding them into her lessons, and even students using the same language to reflect on themselves as a learner to set goals for themselves or describe characters in texts read in their classroom (For those returning Spicewood families I'm sure you've even heard your own children using these attributes!).

The Learner Profile sets the stage for a unique learning environment here at Spicewood, providing our students with an education of the whole child by "developing internationally minded people who...help create a better and more peaceful world." This week I thought I would share a quick video that explains a little bit more about these attributes WHY they lie at the core of WHAT we DO here everyday!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

As teachers and students are getting to know each other at the start of the school year, they are primarily working to set up systems and structures with their new community of learners.  The unit of inquiry, Who We Are, is a natural start of the year for most grade levels on our campus. This unit primarily focuses on different beliefs, values, and human relationships. The past two weeks, our students have explored these ideas (in relation to their classroom and school community) through a variety of read alouds, classroom discussions/meetings, and other team building activities.

What's unique to an IB classroom is the role that the teacher plays. As a guide or facilitator, the PYP teachers provide learning experiences that allow students to construct their own (more valuable) meaning of concepts explored in the classroom. In order to participate in this innovative and effective learning environment, however, the classroom must first establish Essential Agreements, or guidelines that all students agree upon. The creation of the Essential Agreements is one of the first ways that teachers provide students with an opportunity to share their thinking. It models the framework for the learning community, displaying the value of student input and feedback as part of the learning process. The Essential Agreements are visited throughout the year, being added to and/or edited as the learning community sees fit.

As a campus each year, we mindfully choose a handful of attributes and attitudes to be a central focus of our essential agreements, uniting our community at Spicewood Elementary. This year we have chosen:Below is a quick look at how just some of our classrooms have interpreted these attitudes and (Learner Profile) attributes!
Balanced   Caring   Empathy   Reflective   Open-Minded

Below is a quick look at how just some of our classrooms have interpreted these attitudes and (Learner Profile) attributes!

Essential Agreements are not only limited to school environment. These agreements may also extend to the home (you may already have some of your own, or perhaps chose to focus on the same five we have here at school)! This would be a great dinner “table talk” idea as we are all getting settled into new routines being back at school.

Ask your child about their classroom Essential Agreements and what part they played in creating this living document in learning even more about Who We Are and be sure to find these in your child's classroom on Open House next Thursday!

Please join with us in achieving our goal and making a difference in the education, health and welfare of our children.

Please purchase your PTA membership in the Spicewood PTA Store for only $10.00 per person. Memberships will also be available for purchase at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 8. Don’t leave without becoming a member!
If you have any question please contact Sandy Parent, PTA membership chair at sandyparent@austin.rr.com

Volunteer Training
All Spicewood volunteers must complete a brief training. Please Choose your training session:
Option 1: Tuesday, September 13th at 7:45am after drop off
Option 2: Tuesday, September 13th at 7pm.

Trainings will be held in the school library and take approximately 30 minutes. Can’t make one of these sessions? You can complete the General Volunteer Training online on the PTA Volunteer Page. In addition, home room parent volunteers should plan to stay after the general training for additional job specific information (will take 30 minutes).

Merchant Rebates - Volunteers Needed
Want to be involved in your child's classroom with a job you can mostly do from home? Consider volunteering to be Merchant Rebates Coordinator for your child's class! In addition to forwarding a few emails to your class, you'll collect, trim, sort, bundle, tally, and turn in the various Labels that Spicewood collects and redeems. Let your child's teacher know you want to help!

This year we no longer have Target REDcard in our line-up, and the Labels for Education program is also winding down.
However, we still redeem Box Tops for Education, Community Coffee, Tyson A+, and My Coke Rewards; and we also benefit from AmazonSmile, Randalls, and Office Depot!

For more information, please visit the Merchant Rebates Page. Questions? Contact Lisa Revelett: revelett@merchantrebates.com, or Debbie Price: dmprice1967@gmail.com.

Book Fair - Volunteers Needed

Join us for adventures on the high seas at this year’s Bookaneer Book Fair on Monday, September 26, through Friday, September 30, from 7:30am - 4:00pm. It takes many volunteers to make the Book Fair a success and we need your help! Please visit the Online Volunteer Schedule on the Volunteer Page to sign up for a short 2 hour shift. Thanks and see you at the Book Fair!
