Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

Spicewood had a very busy week last week. We have so much to share under Celebrations section! This week our fifth grade students will be off to the Outdoor School for three days to experience team building, nature discovering and making connections all around their learning. Then we're off to a full week of Fall Break to enjoy family time and some good food!

Celebrations

Student Council Election

All 826 students at Spicewood participated in the Student Council Presidential Election last Tuesday. Our hope is that our students are equipped to grow as citizens that practice their civic duty to participate in elections to come. Congratulations to President Noah G. and Vice President William L. for being elected!

3rd Grade Music Program
3rd grade students  were very excited to sing their Spaced Out songs, and they sounded awesome! Thank you all for coming out to support our students and their hard work! Big thanks to 3rd grade teachers, Ms. Tess and Ms. Mary for their hard work!

Veteran's Day Assembly
Spicewood held two assemblies to honor our veterans past and present. Our students sang songs, presented a student created poem and letters to show our appreciation and honor the veterans. Thanks to all the veterans that joined us. Thank you for your service that allowed us our freedom.

Chess Club Tournament
The Spicewood Chess Club Students attended the Kealing Middle School Scholastic tournament last weekend and did a fantastic job! 34 schools were represented at the tournament. The Spicewood students won 2 trophies for first place, 3 for second place and 1 trophy for third place. Included in the winnings was an incredible first place win by the Spicewood kindergarten and 1st grade absolute beginner group! Information and pictures here: http://www.spicewoodchess.org/ Congratulations!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

Giving students a voice encourages ownership in their learning and school community. Our PYP Student Council provides students with a platform to take action and be involved in their school community. The purpose of electing Student Council Representatives and Ambassadors is to help our students comprehend the complex nature of a representational governing body. Members of Student Council take charge and raise ideas to make our school better.
On Tuesday, November 8th, our students listened to candidate speeches full of promises and hopeful visions to help continue to make Spicewood a great place to be, the speeches were followed by a visit to the polls to cast their vote for our 5th grade Presidential representative for the 2016-2017 school year. We are proud of all of our risk-taking students who ran for Student Council!
A big congratulations goes to Noah, our Student Council President and William, our Vice President ! We look forward to your ideas and leadership this school year!

Career Exploration at Spicewood
At Spicewood, we are always looking for ways to get our students thinking about their future. At the elementary level students don't need to know exactly what type of education they're going to get after high school yet or what exact career path they're going to follow, but we do want to allow our students to explore the possibilities of all of the educational and career opportunities out there. This year, we would love to have our parents help with this education and career exploration by participating in our Spicewood Parent Career Spotlight. If you'd like to participate, please fill in the Spicewood Parent Career Spotlight Handout and send it in to school to Mrs. Hougham, our counselor, along with one or more pictures of you at your place of work. Mrs. Hougham will be displaying different Parent Career Spotlights each week on a bulletin board all year long.

Spicewood Community Garden - Volunteers Needed
We would like to keep you updated on the Spicewood Teaching Garden and our primary source of communication will be the Spicewood Teaching Garden Facebook Page.  We encourage you to follow us at https://www.facebook.com/spicewoodteachinggarden so you can see how the teachers use the garden, how you can help out and how the garden grows throughout the year.

Now that our garden is built and planted we need your help to keep it growing. You do not need to be a gardener - No Green Thumbs Required! We are asking families to "adopt" the garden for a week to help us keep the garden growing for the students and teachers at Spicewood throughout the year. There are only 31 weeks left in the school year so SIGN UP early! Responsibilities are easy - light weeding & watering several times during the week, depending on how hot/dry the weather is. Specific instructions will be emailed before your week begins. Don’t delay, sign up today for your chance to take care of the garden!
