Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

Happy Monday! It is hard to believe that this week is the last week of first 9-week grading period. Please be sure to check for missing assignments and incomplete work with your child as teachers will be finalizing grades this week. This week we're celebrating Digital Citizenship Week by learning different ways to be a responsible digital citizen.

Celebrations

Fall Student Led Conferences
All of our parents and students had wonderful opportunities to discuss personalized goals and beyond at our Fall Student Led Conferences last week. We thank all families for taking your valuable time to continue the partnership in education. We also like to thank all teachers who have put in many hours preparing for productive and successful conferences for all!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

One of the PYP's six transdisciplinary themes, How the World Works, allows our students to investigate the natural world, scientific principles, technological advances, and their connection and affect on our world and selves. Within their classrooms, students engage in learning experiences to dig deeper into these ideas through hand-on experiments, research projects and presentations, and classroom discussions. Classrooms also bring in speakers from our community and industry experts to add additional perspectives on concepts and topics explored in their units of inquiry. As a PYP school, we believe that real world connections and application helps students further construct their knowledge and understanding.

Our PTA works hard to support the PYP program by providing classes additional opportunities for students to explore these areas. Last week, Spicewood partnered up with the UT Chemistry department to bring our students an assembly to share more about what scientists do (students are scientists themselves!) and how they use their curiosity to discover more about our world-- this assembly's focus: states of matter!

A big thank you to our PTA for bringing UT Physics Circus to our students!

This Week's News

Digital Citizenship Week
This week is Digital Citizenship week, a week where we work with students to understand what it means to be a digital citizen and how to stay safe online. While we integrate digital citizenship concepts throughout the year, this week we will focus on critical thinking, creative credit & copyright, and recognizing the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living, learning, and working in an interconnected digital world. To learn more about how you can support your digital citizen, visit our collection of CommonSense Education's Family Tips

Red Ribbon Week Next Week [10/23-10/27]- SPIRIT DAYS starting Next MONDAY!
This year Spicewood Panthers will celebrate Red Ribbon Week on October 23rd-27th. Students will explore and celebrate making healthy choices for their minds, bodies, and hearts through a variety of activities.

Red Ribbon Spirit Days- students celebrate healthy living by dressing in a different theme each day!
Monday: REaDy for Red Ribbon Spirit Week! Wear as much red as you can
Tuesday: Don’t get MIXED UP with unhealthy choices! Wear mismatched clothes/socks/shoes
Wednesday: DREAM of healthier choices! Wear pajamas
Thursday: Healthy choices are my FAVORITE! Wear as much of your favorite color as you can
Friday: TEAM up for healthy choices! Wear your favorite professional or college sports shirt/jersey

Other Related Activities for Students at School
Students can stop by our Red Ribbon Week bulletin board (in the hallway outside of the teacher’s lounge) to “take an idea” or “leave an idea” about how to keep our minds, bodies, and hearts happy and healthy. There will also be spaces for them to draw pictures representing healthy choices to make a whole school mural that changes day to day as teachers, students, and staff add their creative contributions.

Students will be given Red Ribbon week stickers to celebrate living a healthy lifestyle.

Students will also be given a short exploratory lesson on healthy choices, and say and sign the “Spicewood Commitment to Healthy Choices” (see below):

“I will do my best to live a healthy, balanced life by caring for my mind, body, and heart. I will care for my mind by having a growth mindset, managing my stress, and challenging myself to do my best. I will care for my body by choosing healthy foods, exercising, and getting enough rest. I will care for my heart by using caring language, building friendships, and loving who I am.”

Dear families and community members,

Our 5th grade students have been working hard to quickly learn the songs and speaking parts, which are related to their Sharing the Planet UOI central idea: Humans must innovate and create new solutions in response to the fluctuating availability of resources.

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

On Tuesday, October 10th, our campus will once again host our biannual Student Led Conferences. During these conferences, students are in the "drivers seat" sharing and discussing their goals for the new school year with their parents and teacher. Students reflect on the Learner Profile attributes and complete the Learner Profile Continuum. This tool allows students to evaluate where they think they currently stand and share their strengths and areas for improvement in relation to the Learner Profile (the heart of the IB program).  The development of these attributes is a shared effort of students, parents, and school community collectively working together to help students meet their goals and grow as internationally minded people.

We're sharing a helpful tool/parent resource to support ways that you  can take action at home and best support your child the PYP program. The resource breaks down each attribute providing ideas for what you can do at home, suggested books to read with your child, and helpful questions and sentence stems you can use to start conversations with your child. We encourage you to print it out and keep it handy throughout the year as you debrief with your child at the end of the day, support with projects and other inquiry based assignments. (**Parents Tip: Books are a GREAT way to discuss and address the Learner Profile attributes)

Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

We will have a super busy week this week! Book Fair begins today through Friday with the awesome Food Truck Night on Tuesday! Then on Friday, we have Kids Invite Someone Special (K.I.S.S.) Cook Out where our students get to invite someone special to have lunch! I'm sad to miss this event for the first time in 5 years of my tenure here due to a family wedding in NYC this weekend but our leadership will be out there to greet you and take photos to share with the community!

Celebrations

Breakfast with Dads Hosted by WatchDOGS
We had a great turn out at our annual Breakfast with Dads event hosted by Spicewood WatchDOGS. Thank you for all the fathers and father-figures that took time out of their busy morning to come and participate! Big kudos to go out to wonderful dads that hosted the event!

First PTA Meeting
We were happy to see many new and returning parents at our first PTA meeting last Thursday. Parents learned more about our wonderful IB program from our fantastic IB Coordinator, Ms. Vance. Some of our new PTA Board members introduced themselves and spoke about PTA business including; amending our budget to fund some great projects and programs, our PTA membership goals, and changes to our Auction this year. We will soon be surveying parents and teachers to vote on how to allocate the Adventure Dash proceeds. Spicewood's PTA strives to keep parents well informed about all the programs, events and activities available to our PTA community, so please stay tuned and visit our PTA website for everything that's happening around here!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

Every year our teachers reevaluate the implementation of our PYP program and reflect on where we want to go as a school. Our entire campus sits down together to reflect on and rewrite our vision and mission statements. These statements give us a purpose in our every day actions and decision making. Ms. Kim shared our new vision statement, Spicewood aspires to be a caring community of innovative, globally minded citizens who take action, with our community a few weeks ago and our teachers and and students are already living up to it!

Spicewood aspires to be a caring

    This Week's News

    Morning Drop-Off
Parents, thank you for supporting independence and responsibility of our students by allowing them to walk to their class on their own. In any cases that you must walk into the building with your child, please sign in at the front office and get a badge.

Traffic Safety Letter from Hope Church - Pastor Robinson
Parents, please note the letter from Pastor Robinson regarding safety using their facility.
Speed Bumps: There are four sets of speed bumps in our parking lot. We
believe a safe speed in any parking lot with children is 5-7 mph. We hope these
bumps will serve as a reminder to mindful of your speed and the surroundings.

 Exit Only: Our parking lot is “ONE WAY”. We have “Exit Only” signs posted,
with reflective signs, making it easier to see in darker hours.

 Right Turn Only: After receiving feedback from the crossing guards and
observing the traffic patterns on Olson Drive, we have cones at the exit to
encourage a “RIGHT TURN ONLY”. During high traffic times, please exit the
    parking lot by turning right.

 Curbs and Circle Drive: Thank you for your response to Principal Kim’s notes
about not parking in the circular drive in front of the church. This has been quite
helpful for the elderly and deliveries. We would add a reminder to be mindful of
not parking on street curbs or blocking sidewalk ramps.

 U-Turns on Olson Drive: As a final word of concern, making U-Turns on Olson
Drive is a violation, and it is very dangerous. We understand the traffic pattern
around Spicewood ES and Hope Church may be inconvenient during peak times,

but the safety of our children and other pedestrians is of the upmost concern.

Saddle Up for the Book Fair!
The Scholastic Wild West Book Fair is a major fundraising event for the Spicewood Library. Proceeds from the book fair pay for author visits, storytellers, online resources (TumbleBooks, PebbleGo, e-books), and of course, BOOKS. The Book Fair will be open daily this week starting Monday, September 25, through Friday, September 29, from 7:30am - 4:00pm. More information on our Book Fair webpage.

Book Fair Family Night: Round up your posse and come devour a book as well as some dinner at the Book Fair Wild West Party on Tuesday, September 26, from 5:00 - 8:00pm. There will be a square dance party and several food trucks for your dining convenience.

Wimpy Kid Pre-sale Opportunity: Diary of a Wimpy Kid 12: The Getaway is available for pre-order at the Book Fair. Stop by to purchase your copy before the fair closes at 4:00pm on Friday, Sept 29. A portion of each purchase benefits the Spicewood Library!

K.I.S.S. (Kids Invite Someone Special) Cookout 2017-2018

The Annual KISS Cookout will be held Friday, September 29th, 2017 during your child’s lunchtime. You may invite grandparents, friends, neighbors, anyone that is someone special in your child's life. You are welcome to bring your own food to the Cookout, in which case you don’t need to return the form that was sent home in Friday Folders. If you can volunteer to help with this event, please click here. I'm sad to say I'll be missing this event for the first time in my 5 years at Spicewood due to a family wedding that will happen that weekend in NYC.

The deadline for submitting entries is Friday, October 27, 2017. For more information, including rules and entry forms, check out the Spicewood PTA Reflections website

Please take a moment to join Spicewood PTA!
Your voice benefits your kids and your school! Joining doesn't mean you have to volunteer, it is simply a way to stay connected and help support many of the fun and educational programs and activities at Spicewood. In an effort to go paperless this year, please sign up through http://www.joinpta.org/. It only takes a minute!
Anyone is welcome to join PTA - parents, grandparents, neighbors, etc. Thank you for your continued support!
