Happy Monday! It is hard to believe that this week is the last week of first 9-week grading period. Please be sure to check for missing assignments and incomplete work with your child as teachers will be finalizing grades this week. This week we're celebrating Digital Citizenship Week by learning different ways to be a responsible digital citizen.
All of our parents and students had wonderful opportunities to discuss personalized goals and beyond at our Fall Student Led Conferences last week. We thank all families for taking your valuable time to continue the partnership in education. We also like to thank all teachers who have put in many hours preparing for productive and successful conferences for all!
IB PYP 101
This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.
One of the PYP's six transdisciplinary themes, How the World Works, allows our students to investigate the natural world, scientific principles, technological advances, and their connection and affect on our world and selves. Within their classrooms, students engage in learning experiences to dig deeper into these ideas through hand-on experiments, research projects and presentations, and classroom discussions. Classrooms also bring in speakers from our community and industry experts to add additional perspectives on concepts and topics explored in their units of inquiry. As a PYP school, we believe that real world connections and application helps students further construct their knowledge and understanding.
Our PTA works hard to support the PYP program by providing classes additional opportunities for students to explore these areas. Last week, Spicewood partnered up with the UT Chemistry department to bring our students an assembly to share more about what scientists do (students are scientists themselves!) and how they use their curiosity to discover more about our world-- this assembly's focus: states of matter!
A big thank you to our PTA for bringing UT Physics Circus to our students!
This Week's News
Digital Citizenship Week
This week is Digital Citizenship week, a week where we work with students to understand what it means to be a digital citizen and how to stay safe online. While we integrate digital citizenship concepts throughout the year, this week we will focus on critical thinking, creative credit & copyright, and recognizing the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living, learning, and working in an interconnected digital world. To learn more about how you can support your digital citizen, visit our collection of CommonSense Education's Family Tips.

Red Ribbon Spirit Days- students celebrate healthy living by dressing in a different theme each day!

Other Related Activities for Students at SchoolStudents can stop by our Red Ribbon Week bulletin board (in the hallway outside of the teacher’s lounge) to “take an idea” or “leave an idea” about how to keep our minds, bodies, and hearts happy and healthy. There will also be spaces for them to draw pictures representing healthy choices to make a whole school mural that changes day to day as teachers, students, and staff add their creative contributions.
Students will be given Red Ribbon week stickers to celebrate living a healthy lifestyle.
Students will also be given a short exploratory lesson on healthy choices, and say and sign the “Spicewood Commitment to Healthy Choices” (see below):
“I will do my best to live a healthy, balanced life by caring for my mind, body, and heart. I will care for my mind by having a growth mindset, managing my stress, and challenging myself to do my best. I will care for my body by choosing healthy foods, exercising, and getting enough rest. I will care for my heart by using caring language, building friendships, and loving who I am.”
Dear Westwood Learning Community Family,
The recent parent forum held at Westwood High School on Sept. 20 provided a valuable opportunity for me to gain insight into what’s important to you and how the District can better support students. Thank you for attending and participating in the feedback sessions.
You may view the notes and feedback from the forum here. Once you have clicked through to the notes, scroll to the bottom of the file to find the tabs for each of the questions and feedback cards.
The next parent forum is scheduled on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at Canyon Vista Middle School from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. To focus our work at the upcoming forum, please take a few minutes to complete an agenda survey. Canyon Vista Middle School is located at 8455 Spicewood Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78759.

Special Education Parent Coffee
Parents of Special Education students are invited to join Mrs. Kim and one of our special education teachers for coffee and conversation on Friday, October 27 from 8-9AM in the Inquiry Lab. This is an opportunity to have an informal and informational discussion with educators to foster communication and mutual support. In addition, Candy Squilla, RRISD Special Education Parent Liaison, will attend the event to provide an overview of her role and the resources available for parents.
Flu Clinic at Spicewood
Spicewood will be having a Flu Clinic for students on Monday, October 30 from 8:15-11:15AM. Nurse Sam sent home Parent Consent Form last Friday in the Friday Folder. If you'd like your child to participate, please fill out the form and return it to your child's homeroom teacher as soon as possible.
REFLECTIONS Creativity Contest
This PTA-sponsored program allows your child to come up with her or his own way to express this year’s theme: Within Reach. Children can enter as many pieces as they’d like across six categories (literature, visual arts, photography, film production, dance choreography, and musical composition). Your child does not have to be an accomplished artist or expert writer to enter. It’s all about a child’s interpretation and expression of the theme. The deadline for submitting entries is Friday, October 27, 2017. For more information, including rules and entry forms, check out the Spicewood PTA Reflections website.
Your voice benefits your kids and your school! Joining doesn't mean you have to volunteer, it is simply a way to stay connected and help support many of the fun and educational programs and activities at Spicewood. In an effort to go paperless this year, please sign up through http://www.joinpta.org/. It only takes a minute!
Anyone is welcome to join PTA - parents, grandparents, neighbors, etc. Thank you for your continued support!
