Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

We had a fabulous time at our Spring Carnival last week! I hope everyone who partook in the event enjoyed it as much as I did. This Wednesday is Administrative Professional's Day so please take a moment to thank our office ladies if/when you see them this week.

Celebrations

Spring Carnival
We had a huge turn out at our annual Spring Carnival. BIG THANKS to Mrs. Anne McWilliams, Mrs. Manuela Friedrich, and Mrs. Stephanie Engels for spearheading the entire event to a great success! Thank you for all the teachers and parents that volunteered at the event as well! Events like this make me feel so proud to be a part of this community!

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

The theme, How We Organize Ourselves, is one of the six transdisciplinary themes of Spicewood's PYP Curriculum Framework. The transdisciplinary themes allow students to explore them in all subject areas, have global significance for all and cultures, and ultimately relate to what they learn in life. Each grade level spends six weeks exploring this theme, investigating organizations in communities, human-made systems, and the economic activities and their impact on people and the environment.

Our second grade focus more specifically on how "people work to meet personal, financial, and societal needs." [central idea]. One of their culminating learning experiences is Market Day. In the weeks leading up to this event, students explore the differences between wants and needs in relation to our communities and economies, persuasive texts in media and print, in addition to the creative process in order to transform an idea into an actual product.

On Market Day, students set up their booths with their persuasive advertisements and products, ready to sell to their peers. Student products include pencil holders, homemade dog treats, jewelry, pet rocks, and art work. The event gives students an opportunity to engage in the buying and selling process in a community, reflecting on the experience as a whole and how it organizes a group of people. They used their communication skills to help sell their products and negotiate prices.

Take a look at some of the student products below!

      This Week's News

      Personnel Update
I want to keep our stakeholders informed about a few movements in projected teaching assignments for the next school year.

We have two teachers- Mrs. Julie Jacobs (2nd) & Mrs. Peggy Powers (TAG Specialist)- that we'll be wishing happy trails as they retire at the end of the school year. Mrs. Susan Albright (5th) will be joining the new Pearson Ranch Middle School community to teach science as it's always been her dream to teach at the middle school level.

      • Ms. Jo Williams (current 4th) will start serving as a TAG Specialist next school year.
      • Mrs. Amy Mitchell (5th) will be taking over the 5th Grade TAG class position that Mrs. Albright has been in.
      • Mrs. Jenni Redick (current Kinder) expressed a wish to join the 2nd grade team so she'll be joining them next school year.
      • Mrs. Cortney Sanchez (current 1st) expressed a wish to explore a different grade level next year so she'll be joining the 4th grade team.
      Bike Found
This bicycle was found at the front of our building a couple weeks ago. If this belongs to you, please come claim it in the front office.

      Visitors Sign-In Change in Expectation
RRISD has gone through a safety & security audit with a 3rd party company. It was recommended that all schools have visitors sign in both on Raptor System and on paper. In case of pressing emergency, if we only have visitors signed in on Raptor, it would be difficult to get a quick list of those who are in the building. I understand it's going to take a minute or two longer; however, with continuous unsettling events happening around the country in schools, I'd like all of us to be vigilant about doing everything that we can to ensure safety and security of all stakeholders. Next to the Raptor computer, there will be a paper sign-in binder available for your beginning today.

      Marathon Kids Finisher Celebration
For the students that would like to participate in Marathon Kids Finisher Celebration, please join in the final celebration at the Dragon Stadium on Saturday, April 29 at 9AM.

      Teacher Appreciation - Gift Policy
Parents, as we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in a week (5/1-5/5), I wanted to remind you of the district policy that our teachers and staff members are to abide by.

Employees of the District may accept the following:

o Gifts that are of nominal value given for the purpose of advertising, ceremonial occasions, or official events.
o Infrequent business meals of nominal value.
o Infrequent entertainment or social invitations, provided the entertainment or social invitation is not directed to the District or a select group of area school districts.
o As used in this policy, nominal value is defined as $50 or less from an entity

When purchasing a gift for your child's teacher or a staff member, please do not exceed the value of $50, including a gift card. Class Gift is not allowed. Each parent should be left up to their own to decide how to show appreciation to their child's teacher.

Teacher Appreciation Week May 1-5 [Message from PTA]
Teachers help us grow in mind, body and soul. Please help us celebrate the amazing teachers and staff at Spicewood Elementary during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 1st through May 5th! Have your child bring a gently used book for the classroom library that is appropriate for their grade level.

It's a community event so invite your neighbors even if their children do not attend Spicewood. We'll have a helicopter landing in our field just like last year! I look forward to seeing everyone this Friday! If you pre-ordered tickets, your Carnival ticket bag should have been in your child's backpack last Friday.

      IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

During our second round of Exhibition Mentor Meetings, students met with their groups to further discuss and reflect upon what lies at the heart of the PYP program, the Learner Profile

The leaves and branches are the attributes that we "see" on the outside. Students are risk-takers as they present to their classmates, open-minded during discussions with their peers, and caring as they take action and collect cans for our community. With their mentors, students discussed on these attributes and how they contribute to being a more globally-minded person.

The Learner Profile works in conjunction with the attributes, or the "roots". The roots are our values. They are what people can't see all of the time, but lie under the surface. Our values are built upon our experiences, interactions with other people, and reflection on those experiences. By learning more about and demonstrating the attributes, students build a value system based on these experiences. At Spicewood, our teachers integrate the Learner Profile and attributes into everyday conversations, student conversations and collaboration.

By the time our students enter 5th grade they are well versed in the language of a globally minded-thinker. During Mentor Meetings, students shared how it is our take responsibility to model these attributes to those around us. This meeting culminated with several students finding even more value in their learning here. And, what's even more important is that their actions and words shows us what it means to be an IB student each and every day!

Optional Parent Input Form Due April 28 [No Late Forms Accepted]

Optional Parent Input Form has been placed in the electronic Friday Folder. I ask that all parents respect the expertise of our staff and leadership and not request a specific teacher for your child. To briefly explain how class lists are made, we first begin with grade level team teachers getting together and placing them in groups for next school year as they know their students and their needs best. Then we come together at a faculty meeting and we go through a refining process again vertically. Leadership then refines the lists several times over the summer based on student services, needs and teachers' certifications/specialties to best serve all of our 835 students. The form is due Friday, April 28 to your child's teacher or the front office. No late forms will be accepted as the process begins the first week of May.

          IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

In the final year of the PYP (Primary Years Program) students participate in a culminating project called Exhibition. This project gives students the opportunity to reflect on and apply the knowledge and skills acquired here at Spicewood. This final unit of inquiry is quite different than all other units within the program in that it unites the 5th grade students, all teachers, parents, and other community members in a collaborative experience that incorporates all of the essential elements (knowledge, skills, attitudes, concepts, action) of the PYP program.

This last week our school began this process with our first round of mentor meetings. During these meetings, small groups fifth grade students met with different grade level teachers to engage in reflective conversations about their work in the student portfolios, specifically focusing on different artifacts or learning experiences that particularly “tugged at their heart strings” during their time at Spicewood Elementary.

We’ll be following our fifth graders over the next seven weeks sharing with you more about the process of exhibition, culminating on our Exhibition Day, Wednesday, May 24th (formal invitation to follow!).

Our Panther Choir students put together a beautiful concert last Thursday evening. Huge thanks goes to Ms. Tess as she's been working diligently with our students after school throughout the school year to teach our students and instill a love for music.

              Math Pentathlon K-1 Tournament
We had 13 students from Spicewood participate in the tournament. They all did am amazing job. All the kids demonstrated good sportsmanship and had a positive attitude, no matter if they won or lost. Special congratulations to Misha for winning a gold medal and Avery for winning a Bronze Medal.

              IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

In their Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry, students were inquiring about our Earth's resources and how access (abundance and/or lack of) affects living things. Within the unit, students learned about different land forms and bodies found on Earth and the natural resources found there. Together they compared and contrasted other countries and discussed the inequalities of resources in those places.

Towards the end of the inquiry, the first grade teachers talked to students about different ways that organizations help people meet their needs and provide resources to them they may be lacking. Some of our first graders asked, "How can WE help people get access to food in our community?". What a perfectly authentic prompt for teachers to facilitate action on our campus!

With a little bit of research, the teachers and students learned about the Round Rock Empty Bowls Festival that benefits our very own community with food and other resources. Empty Bowls is an "international grassroots effort ti fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group". This yearly festival brings our community together, donating 100% of the proceeds to fight local hunger.

              The finished products!
This learning experience brought an awareness to students that hunger isn't something only experienced in far off places, it's right here in our community too. Our teachers are always listening to students' questions and conversations to help facilitate the learning in the classroom. At Spicewood Elementary we're proud that our students feel the agency to say HOW they want to learn and take inspired action to make it happen, in turn, making positive impacts on our community and world!

              How can YOU take action?

2017 CVMS Mustang Orientation for 5th grade Students & Parents
Parents and students are invited to an informative evening regarding becoming a middle school, Mustang family. Please note this meeting is different from the meeting held in February. The purpose of that meeting was to inform parents and students of the various elective courses offered. The purpose of this meeting is to hear directly from current 6th grade students about life as a Mustang! In addition, there will be an opportunity to meet some staff, our PTA Executive Board, and tour the school building. We hope you are able to join us on Tuesday, April 11 at 6PM in our gym.
