Updates from the Principal

Dear families and community members,

With 3 weeks of school left ahead of us, we have A LOT of events coming up! This week Spring Student-Led Conferences will occur throughout the week. On Tuesday, Spicewood staff and leadership cordially invite all volunteers to join us at the Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast starting at 8AM in the library.  We also look forward to seeing many families at Phil's Ice House/Amy's Ice Cream the same evening. All students at Spicewood will participate in the annual Field Day this Friday and I know we still need VOLUNTEERS! :) It's a day full of fun and physical activities and we cannot do it without your help!

Celebrations

Canned Food Donated to Joe Lee Johnson ES in RRISD
BIG thanks to our school community for donating a lot of canned food last week in honor of Teacher Appreciation week! We were able to deliver them to Joe Lee Johnson ES last Thursday to help stock up their food pantry! It was such an amazing experience of giving and team working to help those in need within our own district community! Thanks to PTA and Mrs. Beatriz Gunz, the VP of Programs for organizing such an amazing opportunity.

UT Chemestiry Assembly for 3rd & 5th Grade
Our 3rd and 5th grade students had an awesome assembly last Friday with activities involving chemistry. A team consisted of a professor and graduate students from UT came out and presented such an interactive session that captured all of our students' attention. Thanks to Mrs. Karen Trenk (PTA Representative) and Mrs. Jessica Vance (IB Coordinator) for coordinating the assembly! (All safety measures were in place for safety of our students)

IB PYP 101

This portion of Mrs. Kim's letter is contributed by Mrs. Vance, our PYP Coordinator.

One of the PYP’s six transdisciplinary themes, How the World Works, allows our students to investigate the natural world, scientific principles, technological advances, and their connection and affect on our world and selves. Within their classrooms, students engage in learning experiences to dig deeper into these ideas through hand-on experiments, research projects and presentations, and classroom discussions. Classrooms also bring in speakers from our community and industry experts to add additional perspectives on concepts and topics explored in their units of inquiry. As a PYP school, we believe that real world connections and application helps students further construct their knowledge and understanding.

Our PTA works hard to support the PYP program by providing classes additional opportunities for students to explore these areas. Last week, Spicewood partnered up with the UT Chemistry department to bring our students an assembly about combustion. While playing with hydrogen, balloons, bottle rockets, and fireworks, the UT presenters talked about what combustion is, how it occurs and what makes bigger reactions (catalysts).

Thank you to our PTA and the Chemistry Department for providing this great experience for our students. What a great way to end the week!

Spirit Night at Phil's Ice House/Amy's Ice Cream
PTA will be hosting the final Spirit Night of the school year this Tuesday at Phil's Ice House/Amy's Ice Cream from 5-8pm. Kindergarten teachers, Spanish teachers, Mrs. Haney (ITS) and Mrs. Hougham (Counselor) will be there for part of the evening. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

Spicewood Kindergarten Round-Up Event: Snack and Story Time
If you have an incoming 2017-2018 kindergartner, please join us for our next Round-Up event! Come enjoy milk and cookies in the cafeteria, then head to the library for a story from our wonderful librarian, Mrs. Laura Reeb. This event is a great way for your child to get a feel for how things work in the cafeteria. The price for cookies is .75 and a carton of milk is .60, for a total of $1.35. YOU MUST BRING EXACT CHANGE! The cafeteria staff is not stocked with extra change since most students pay for their lunches using My School Bucks accounts. If you prefer not to make a snack purchase, please feel free to bring your own snack from home. At 1:15, we will head to the library, where Mrs. Reeb will read a story and answer questions about the library. For your convenience, you and your child may attend this event on either Wednesday, May 17, or Thursday, May 18, from 12:45-1:45 pm. The itinerary is the same for both days, so pick the day that best fits your schedule. To RSVP for this event, please visit the Spicewood Kinder Round-Up page.
